Passage Opens
March 24th, 2009Just got back from opening weekend in Minneapolis, and it is a strange sensation to know that the show will continue to run for two weeks, and the last thing I’ll hear will be in the form of reviews via the internet.
Peter Rothstein, Denise Prosek, and all the amazing designers and crew have worked miracles to get this show on its feet, and the fabulously talented and hardworking cast and musicians breathe life into it every night. It really does take the gifts of so many people to put this thing together, and I believe everyone shines and will be recognized for their great work. The most gratifying thing is to see and hear the response from the house each night, to know they’re discovering new things along the way.
We’ve already been given some very generous reviews, and a big fat preview article about myself and Katie, but these are things that must remain inconsequential. Katie has been diligently refusing to read them, and in aspiring to a “Roarkian” creative mindset, I will endeavor to remain indifferent to either praise or criticism to the best of my ability, treating them both rightly as impostors, to paraphrase Kipling.
While I readjust to the necessities of reality (bills, groceries, refreshing the coffee till, resewing buttons and darning socks), I’ll know that for the next two weeks, many miles away, people are singing the melodies I wrote in my tiny room in Brooklyn, heard only through headphones and my keyboard, and hoping that someone else is listening, and is in some way, being touched.
